This week 46 Nooksack Valley Middle School students attended a ¡La Chispa! program in Bellingham to help ignite a flame of focused energy with Latino students across the state.
Cristal Campus, NVMS assistant principal, led the field trip for the Nooksack Valley Schools students, helping them take part in the bilingual (English and Spanish) program that aligns with state social-emotional learning standards and aims to build positive academic and self-identity within Latinx students.
¡La Chispa!, which translates as The Spark, helps students build their self-confidence, strengthen their cultural identity and increase academic success, Campos says. Student success is largely depended on positive adult role models, school involvement and community service and ¡La Chispa! aims to offer students advancement in all three areas.
